A possible cause of the fire that the Williams Fire Department responded to in a guest room at the Econo Lodge at 750 N. Grand Canyon Blvd. in Williams at 4:13 p.m. Tuesday afternoon has been determined.
The fire is believed to have started in the wiring of the hotel rooms bathroom ceiling exhaust fan. Charing found in the attic of the hotel suggests it may have been smoldering for some time before the fire was discovered.
Luckily, the fire was discovered before it was able to spread throughout the attic. Attic fires can often lead to the total loss of a structure as they can spread quickly and over the entire span of the building.
Fires started by ceiling exhaust fans are not uncommon. It is important to make sure the fan is off before you leave your home, and replace any fan that is making unusual noises or is malfunctioning in any way. Replacement is generally relatively easy and low cost, and can be done by a competent homeowner in most cases.
This fire also provides a good reminder to check your smoke alarms to make sure the are functioning properly.
Fans and smoke alarms can be found on Amazon and elsewhere.
